WhatsApp Web Adds Voice and Video Calling With Call Transfer and Waiting Room

WhatsApp has added voice and video calling to its web platform, allowing users to make and receive calls directly from their browser.



In a blog post, WhatsApp said users can now make and receive one-on-one and group audio and video calls directly from WhatsApp Web without installing an app. The web experience includes screen sharing, reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab that provides access to call history and favorites. Calls on the web are end-to-end encrypted, just like on other platforms.


WhatsApp is also rolling out Call Transfer, letting users move an active group call from one device to another without hanging up. Users can start a call on a phone or tablet and seamlessly switch it to WhatsApp Web on a larger screen, or move it back to a mobile device when leaving the desk.

For hosts who want more control over group calls, WhatsApp has introduced Waiting Room. When creating a call link with "Require approval to join" enabled, participants enter a waiting room until the host admits them.

Two other improvements focus on call quality. QuickHD brings high-definition video within the first few seconds of a call, rather than ramping up gradually. Noise suppression removes background noise so voices come through more clearly, even in loud or busy environments. The feature can be managed at any time from the in-call settings.

WhatsApp says the new features are rolling out gradually and will be available to everyone soon.
