Samsung Is Sole Supplier of Apple's OLED MacBook Pro Displays [Report]

Samsung Display is the sole supplier of OLED panels for Apple's new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, according to TrendForce.

The supplier has dedicated the first phase of its G8.6 A6 production line in Asan, South Korea, to Apple. The laptop is the first product mass-produced on Samsung's G8.6 fine metal mask OLED line.

Producing the tandem OLED panels at 254 pixels per inch presents challenges for material costs and manufacturing yields. Those requirements also make it difficult for competing panel makers to qualify.

TrendForce forecasts 1.2 million to 1.5 million shipments of the OLED MacBook Pro in 2027. Its $2,899 starting price and continued availability of mini-LED models could limit near-term upgrades.

Across all brands, OLED notebook shipments are forecast to reach 18 million in 2027, up 42.3%, despite a shrinking overall notebook market. That forecast covers the entire OLED notebook category, not just Apple's laptops.

LG Display, BOE, and TCL CSOT are instead targeting an OLED MacBook Air, which the firm expects in 2029. Apple has not announced an OLED Air.

Apple unveiled the touchscreen MacBook Pro on October 28 in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. The redesign also adds a Dynamic Island and supports touch alongside the keyboard and trackpad. The new models are available to pre-order on Amazon ahead of November 6 availability.
