AT&T has just gone live with Wi-Fi Calling for iPhone users following an FCC exemption granted earlier this week.
Wi-Fi Calling lets you make and receive calls over Wi-Fi when your cellular service is poor.
You can enable the feature from Settings -> Phone menu.

It's "live" but not working here in CT on my Iphone 6+ running 9.0.2 - just chatted with a AT&T rep, he had to submit ticket - said ETA for turnaround is 10/14 - it's a widespread issue :( :(

This has got to be one of thebiggest scams I've ever seen AT&T pool. Sing through the logic for just a moment; shouldn't really be an extra feature that you can now use your home Wi-Fi to subsidize for the poor cellular service in your area? Perhaps the better solution would've been for AT&T to reinvest the billions of dollars they billed quarterly into improving and expanding their LTE networks. After all, aren't you paying for your whole Internet and the high-speed playing you subscribe to? Why are you giving any band with at all to AT&T, your cellular phone provider, of who you are paying for a separate line of service to anyways.

By the way, please pardon the poor spelling above. It's not my fault, it's Siri's.

Agree with your sentiments. Coverage here in rural CA is so spotty that AT&T sent a signal amplifier along at no charge. Nice of 'em, but amping up the network would certainly be a better solution, as you say.
Note that flipping you over to wi-fi eats away at your data allotment, as well. Let's face it, AT&T is conservative and makes changes only after a careful analysis shows that they will come out holding the golden end of the stick. Remember their initial ban on users actually using Facetime?
That said, with Verizon showing their true colors by attaching tracking tags to data sent over their network to better peer into the habits of their users, they hardly represent a superior choice.
Let's face it. As in the old days of Ma Bell, we are pretty much alone in the wilderness as far as having anyone advocating our side of the issues. Well, there's the EFF, thankfully, and a handful of others, but overall, we're here layin' in the ditch after the wreck, just waitin' to see if anyone shows up and, if they do, whether they are gonna help us out or give us a ride to the hospital and bill us for our life savings. That analogy hold?

It says it uses your IP address for charges. My question is how does that effect us that use VPNs? In the states I use out of the country IP. Will I be charged roaming? Also if I set my VPN to USA ip when I Amy over seas is it free?

If I travel overseas and turn off cellular, can I use this to call someone in the USA without incurring roaming charges?
0
Otto Aguilar - October 8, 2015 at 10:25pm
No, it says that it is not available outside US.

Actually you can: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/features/wifi-calling.html
"Make and receive unlimited domestic calls within the U.S., Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands at no additional charge"
It seems like T-Mobile has a similar policy but from any country: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-9997
So I expect that eventually AT&T will allow it...

Crazy how Sprint & T-Mobile has had this for over a year and now AT&T is catching up.

stevenlacross - October 9, 2015 at 3:47am
T-mobile has actually had this for about 5-6 years on their android phones

Why - October 9, 2015 at 3:40pm
Yea but T-Mobile and sprint didn't do it the right was and now they have to go through the red tape now (Get a waver from the FCC) ATT was going to do this a while back but they didn't meet the FCC standards .. y'all have to remember the FCC controls everything

Does it still charge you for your minutes? I have a Cisco microcell/3G 4G thing in my home I had to buy for $200 from AT&T last year and it still takes off my minutes when the entire call is going through my paid system to threw an entirely different vendor.
Please check to see if still charges you for usage through it!

Something t-mobile did last year on September. It's funny how att is copying everything t-mobile does. But yea we copied the data stash aka rollover data from them so yea. T-mobile still the best choice as for customer service and saving you money.

I'm not saying that AT&T is better than T-Mobile, but T-Mobile took a big risk introducing WiFi calling without approval from the FCC. The FCC required that there be service for the hearing impaired, we know these features at TTY. AT&T asked if RTS was acceptable and they were just recently (this week I believe) granted the OK on that change. They went through the proper channels. What's so bad about that?
