Apple has started selling a third party router for the first time. You can now purchase the Linksys Velop Whole Home Mesh Wi-Fi System from Apple online and in retail stores.

The addition of the Linksys system to the Apple Store comes amid speculation that Apple has discontinued its AirPort lineup of routers. The AirPort Express hasn't been updated since 2012 and the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule haven't seen an update since 2013. In late 2016, Bloomberg reported that Apple shutdown the wireless router team and dispersed engineers to other projects.

When asked about the move to offer a third party router, an Apple spokesperson told 9to5Mac:

People love our AirPort products and we continue to sell them. Connectivity is important in the home and we are giving customers yet another option that is well suited for larger homes.
