Amazon Prime Video App Now Offers In-App Purchases of Movies and TV Shows

The Amazon Prime Video app has been updated with the ability to rent or buy movies, TV shows, and more. The change is a significant one as previously Amazon resisted offering content for purchase to avoid Apple's 30% cut.

In a statement provided to 9to5Mac, Apple reveals that it now has an "established program for premium subscription video entertainment providers" that allows qualifying apps to offer customers the option to buy or rent content using the payment method tied to their subscription.

This means that Amazon can avoid giving a 30% cut to Apple if customers have a credit card on file that is tied to their subscription. If they don't, Amazon will let users pay via Apple's traditional in-app purchase process which takes a cut of each transaction.

Notably, Apple has also granted the Prime Video app a special entitlement that lets it generate custom in-app purchase metadata. For example, you'll see an age rating on the in-app purchase sheet when checking out.

You can download Amazon Prime Video from the App Store for free. If you don't already have a Prime account, you can get a free trial here.
