Apple has asked suppliers to build as many as 90 million of its next generation iPhones, according to a new report from Bloomberg. The company typically orders an initial run of 75 million units when debuting a new iPhone model.
The upgraded forecast for 2021 would suggest the company anticipates its first iPhone launch since the rollout of Covid-19 vaccines will unlock additional demand. The next iPhones will be Apple’s second with 5G, a key enticement pushing users to upgrade.
Bloomberg notes that the new iPhone will likely get processor, camera, and display improvements. Apple is expected to offer four models, including 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch regular versions and 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch pro versions. The phones are codenamed D16, D17, D63, and D64.
At least one version of the new iPhone could have an LTPO display. Low-temperature polycrystalline oxide displays allow for their refresh rate to be dynamically changed without additional hardware components. This saves power by allowing the display to use low refresh rates when possible. Additionally, new iPhones with LTPO will use also use IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) technology for improved power efficiency and responsiveness.
Similar to previous reports, the site says that Apple plans to reduce the size of the notch, shrinking it further next year, and eventually removing it. The new models will feature advanced video recording features such as improved optical zoom and a faster six-core processor; however, they are not expected to feature in-display Touch ID.
