Apple Watch Series 8 Could Get Body Temperature Sensor [Kuo]

The next generation Apple Watch Series 8 could get a body temperature sensor, according to a new report from TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

The feature didn't make it into the Apple Watch Series 7 due to issues with the algorithm, says Kuo. However, Apple may have made enough progress over the past year to include it with the Series 8.

Apple canceled body temperature measurement for Apple Watch 7 because the algorithm failed to qualify before entering EVT stage last year. I believe Apple Watch 8 in 2H22 could take body temperature if the algorithm can meet Apple's high requirements before mass production.

Kuo says the challenge is dealing with skin temperatures that vary in different environments.

The challenge in implementing precise body temperature measurement is that skin temperature quickly varies depending on outside environments. A smartwatch can't support core temperature measurement in terms of hardware, so it needs an excellent algorithm to work together.

Notably, Samsung is also said to be facing similar challenges with its algorithm. Kuo suggests that the company may not be ready to launch a body temperature feature for its upcoming Watch 5.

Apple is expected to unveil its next generation Apple Watch Series 8 in September. Currently, the Apple Watch Series 7 is on sale for $329.99, a discount of 18% off list.
