It shouldn't be surprising that the 2023 Mac Mini is the best version of the product that Apple has pulled off yet. It looks the same but benefits greatly from the M2 platform, and that's true whether you choose the standard chip or invest in the powerful M2 Pro. Either way, you also gain better Wi-Fi and can expect very few bumps this far into the Apple silicon transition. Spend more on the M2 Pro, and on top of the mighty speed, you'll get to take advantage of even more Thunderbolt 4 ports and more external displays.
It's easy to look at the unchanging design of the 2023 Mac mini and write it off as staid and unchanged from years past, without appreciating the enormous strides in capability that Apple has provided with Apple Silicon. The outward design may be the same, but the new Mac mini may be the best little Apple desktop we've seen, offering an astounding amount of power in a classic chassis.
With the M2 and M2, the Mac Mini sits among the most powerful computers Apple offers at any price point. And let's remember one of the Mac Mini's main selling points: it's mini. The Mac Mini is a tiny package that offers a lot of flexibility. Bundle it with one of Apple's Studio Displays for a great iMac alternative, or use it with an inexpensive monitor for a low-cost workstation. As always, the Mac Mini is a value proposition, and it's never looked better than it does now with the M2 and M2 Pro.
Ultimately it's the price of the Mac mini which could be the deciding factor: this is a very powerful computer that will please everyone from families to students. But it's also available at a sensational price, $599, a full $100 less than the less-powerful Mac mini with M1 chip would have cost you just a week ago.
I think the base M2 Mac Mini is going to be a smart, clear choice for a lot of people. The more powerful, more expensive M2 Pro version isn't as clear cut, but I appreciate the flexibility having both the M2 and M2 Pro versions adds, allowing you to spend anywhere from $599 to $4,499 on a new Mac Mini that meets your specific needs, whether that's creating pro-level YouTube videos or recording and producing the next great true crime podcast.
