Apple Rumored to Increase Price of iPad Pro By Up to 88%

The next iPad Pro is rumored to feature an OLED display but that upgrade could come with a massive price hike, reports The Elec.

According to the industry on the 9th, Apple is considering the price of the organic light emitting diode (OLED) iPad (tablet), which it plans to release for the first time next year, at around $1,500 for the 11-inch model and $1,800 for the 13-inch model. In won, they correspond to 1.98 million won and 2.37 million won, respectively.

When compared to the current iPad Pro lineup, the 11-inch base model would see an 88% price increase from $799 to $1500 and the 12.9-inch base model would see a 64% price increase from $1099 to $1800.

Such a large price hike seems unlikely as this would put iPad Pro prices higher than the MacBook Air at $1199 and the 13-inch MacBook Pro at $1299; however, The Elec notes that these prices are lower than the 14-inch MacBook Pro at $1999.

Some of the alleged price increase is attributed to higher display panel costs. OLED panels for the new iPad Pro models are expected to cost around $270 for the 11-inch and $350 for the 13-inch. That's 2-3X the price of existing low-end 10-inch OLED panels. Apple is also expected to upgrade its iPad Pro models with a faster and more power efficient M3 processor.

OLED for iPad has increased supply price by introducing new processes such as two stack tandem (two light emitting layers) structure, low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin film transistor (TFT), and hybrid OLED structure (glass substrate + thin film encapsulation). It is inevitable. Negotiations on the specific price of OLED for iPad are expected to begin in the summer.

It's unclear if this rumored price hike is accurate; however, we'll let you know if any further reports corroborate the claim. Please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for updates.
