Byline 3 Brings Gesture Navigation to Google Reader

Phantom Fish has announced the release of Byline 3, a major update to the popular RSS news reader and offline web browser for iPhone and iPod touch. Byline 3 replaces fiddly buttons with an intuitive swipe gesture to navigate between items and boasts tight integration with Twitter, Instapaper, and Read It Later. Among the update's many other improvements is automatic caching for offline browsing, which now uses statistical analysis to detect and cache complete web pages for feeds with truncated content.

"Byline 3 lets you swipe from page to page with a natural sideways motion that feels just like moving between images in your iPhone's Photos app," said Milo Bird, the developer of Byline. "It's amazing how fast and frictionless reading your feeds becomes when you no longer have to concentrate on controls - the interface seems to just disappear."

Byline synchronizes up to 1000 new items, starred items, notes, and folders with a free Google Reader account. Items are viewed by folder or individual feed, and a new edit mode allows starring items and marking read/unread in bulk. Articles and their links are displayed in an inline web browser, and can be sent in full by email or shared using Twitter.


Byline provides offline access to all articles, including embedded images. In addition, Byline's offline browsing feature offers instant access to complete web pages. Caching for offline browsing is up to twice as fast as before, and is now fully configurable for each feed.
