Apple has introduced new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models powered by the all-new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, delivering major gains in performance and on-device AI capabilities. The update also brings faster SSD speeds, increased starting storage, and upgraded wireless connectivity.
iClarified's Take
The transition to Apple's Fusion Architecture signals a structural evolution in how the company scales its high-end silicon. Rather than simply increasing core counts, Apple is pairing dies and embedding Neural Accelerators directly into GPU cores, indicating that sustained local inference and AI acceleration are becoming central design priorities. The expansion to 614GB/s of unified memory bandwidth on M5 Max reinforces that macOS Tahoe's deeper Apple Intelligence features are expected to lean heavily on on-device processing rather than cloud offloading.
The move to 14.5GB/s SSD speeds and higher base storage also strengthens the MacBook Pro's position as a self-contained production system for developers, video professionals, and data-intensive workflows. For users upgrading from Intel or M1 systems, this represents a meaningful architectural leap. For recent M3 or M4 owners, the gains are most noticeable in sustained, high-bandwidth or AI-driven workloads rather than everyday tasks.
Built using Apple's new Fusion Architecture, M5 Pro and M5 Max combine two dies into a single system on a chip and are engineered from the ground up for AI. The chips feature an up-to-18-core CPU with six super cores and 12 all-new performance cores. Apple says multithreaded workloads are up to 30 percent faster than the previous generation.
The next-generation GPU includes a Neural Accelerator in each core, enabling up to 4x faster AI performance compared to the previous generation and up to 8x faster AI performance compared to M1 models. Apple also says LLM prompt processing is up to 4x faster than M4 Pro and M4 Max, while AI image generation is up to 8x faster than M1 Pro and M1 Max. Graphics performance sees up to a 50 percent increase over M4 Pro and M4 Max.
M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory with up to 307GB/s of memory bandwidth. M5 Max supports up to 128GB of unified memory with up to 614GB/s of bandwidth, designed for intensive AI workloads, simulations, and large-scale creative projects.
The new MacBook Pro delivers up to 2x faster SSD performance, reaching speeds of up to 14.5GB/s. MacBook Pro with M5 Pro now starts with 1TB of storage, while M5 Max starts with 2TB. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 also now comes standard with 1TB of storage.
Connectivity includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI with support for up to 8K resolution, an SDXC card slot, and MagSafe 3. Apple's new N1 wireless chip enables Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The Liquid Retina XDR display continues to offer up to 1600 nits of peak HDR brightness, with an optional nano-texture glass finish.
The notebooks ship with macOS Tahoe, which introduces enhanced Spotlight capabilities, Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime, and the Phone app, expanded Continuity features including cellular call relay from iPhone, and deeper Apple Intelligence integration.
Additional hardware features include a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View support, studio-quality microphones, and a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio.
Apple says the new models deliver up to 24 hours of battery life and maintain peak performance whether plugged in or on battery power. Fast charging to 50 percent in 30 minutes is supported with a 96W or higher USB-C power adapter.
MacBook Pro is available in space black and silver. Pre-orders begin March 4, with availability starting March 11. Pricing starts at $1,699 for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5. The 14-inch M5 Pro starts at $2,199 and the 16-inch M5 Pro at $2,699. M5 Max configurations begin at $3,599 for the 14-inch and $3,899 for the 16-inch.
