Apple Debuts M5 Pro and M5 Max With 4x Faster AI and New Fusion Architecture

Apple has introduced the M5 Pro and M5 Max, its next generation of custom silicon designed to power the upper tier of the Mac lineup. Built on a new foundation Apple calls Fusion Architecture, the chips combine two third-generation 3-nanometer dies into a single system on a chip. The hardware is set to debut inside the newly updated MacBook Pro, following weeks of tightening retail inventory that signaled an impending refresh.



The most significant shift this generation is how the silicon is assembled. Apple uses advanced packaging to connect two dies with high bandwidth and low latency across the system. Both the M5 Pro and M5 Max feature a new 18-core CPU architecture, with six super cores and 12 all-new performance cores optimized for power-efficient, multithreaded workloads. Apple says the CPU boosts performance by up to 30 percent for pro workloads compared to the previous generation. Relative to older chips such as the M1 Pro and M1 Max, multithreaded performance is up to 2.5x faster.


The M5 Pro scales the graphics architecture introduced in M5 to up to a 20-core GPU, with a Neural Accelerator embedded in each GPU core. M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory, with bandwidth reaching 307GB/s. Apple says it delivers over 4x the peak GPU compute for AI compared to M4 Pro. Overall graphics performance is up to 20 percent higher, while apps that use ray tracing can see gains of up to 35 percent over the previous generation.



For more demanding workflows, the M5 Max pairs the same 18-core CPU with an up-to-40-core GPU, doubling the GPU core count of M5 Pro. The new CPU architecture offers up to 15 percent higher multithreaded performance compared to M4 Max. M5 Max supports up to 128GB of unified memory with bandwidth up to 614GB/s, enabling complex scenes, massive datasets, and larger AI models to run locally. Like the Pro tier, M5 Max delivers over 4x the peak GPU compute for AI compared to M4 Max. Graphics performance is up to 20 percent higher than M4 Max, with ray tracing up to 30 percent faster.

Beyond core counts, both chips share several advanced technologies. A faster 16-core Neural Engine features a higher-bandwidth connection to system memory to accelerate on-device AI features and Apple Intelligence. The latest Media Engine adds hardware-accelerated H.264 and HEVC, AV1 decode, and ProRes encode and decode. Apple also introduced Memory Integrity Enforcement, described as an industry-first, always-on memory safety protection designed to guard against memory-based exploits without compromising performance.



External connectivity advances with Thunderbolt 5. Each Thunderbolt 5 port is supported by its own custom-designed controller integrated directly on the chip, enabling higher data throughput for high-resolution displays and fast external storage. The M5 Pro and M5 Max power the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, which are available for pre-order starting tomorrow, with availability beginning Wednesday, March 11.
