Amazon has announced a new agreement with Delta Air Lines to bring its low Earth orbit satellite network, Amazon Leo, to the airline's fleet starting in 2028. The service will deliver free, high-speed Wi-Fi from gate to gate for Delta SkyMiles members.
Delta will begin by installing the system on 500 aircraft. Each plane will use a phased array antenna based on Amazon's Leo Ultra design, with support for speeds up to 1 Gbps down and 400 Mbps up. The network runs on satellites orbiting about 370 miles above Earth, which helps cut down latency compared to older geostationary systems.
That added capacity should make a noticeable difference for passengers. Streaming video, video calls, messaging, and uploading content are all expected to work more reliably than they do on current in-flight Wi-Fi.
The deal builds on Delta's existing relationship with Amazon Web Services. The airline already uses AWS for parts of its reservation systems and operations. Under this agreement, the companies plan to expand that work to include Amazon Leo, along with AI and other technologies aimed at improving the overall travel experience.
Amazon Leo, formerly known as Project Kuiper, is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network, built to provide high-speed internet using thousands of satellites in orbit. The company already has more than 200 satellites in space and has secured over 80 launches with providers including SpaceX, Blue Origin, Arianespace, and United Launch Alliance. Those launches will support deployment of its initial constellation, which is expected to exceed 3,000 satellites.
Amazon says it began enterprise preview testing of the network in late 2025 using production hardware. Broader availability is planned for 2026 as additional satellites are launched and coverage expands. The Delta agreement represents one of the first large-scale commercial uses of the network, with the service expected to reach a significant portion of the airline's fleet over time.
