Apple has reportedly agreed to source foldable OLED panels exclusively from Samsung Display for the next three years, according to a report from The Elec. The arrangement, which runs through 2028, ensures Samsung remains the sole provider for the first several generations of Apple's folding hardware, effectively keeping rivals like BOE and LG Display out of the supply chain for this specialized component.
The exclusivity was reportedly a condition from Samsung Display, which sought justification for supplying its most advanced technology to a direct competitor. Apple is said to have agreed to the terms given the lack of viable alternatives. While BOE supplies panels for companies like Huawei, it is viewed as falling short of Apple's requirements in durability, quality, and yield. Meanwhile, LG Display has yet to demonstrate consistent mass production of foldable smartphone panels at scale.
Samsung plans to begin mass production in the second quarter of 2026, though initial targets appear quite conservative. Apple is expected to ship roughly 3 million units this year, a sharp drop from earlier market projections of 10 million. An industry official said the lower volume reflects a strategy to gauge market response before adjusting supply, following the more measured rollout seen with the Vision Pro.
The technology behind these panels focuses heavily on long-term reliability. To avoid cracking issues at the bending point, Apple is utilizing Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE). This process removes the traditional polarizer and integrates the color filter directly into the encapsulation layer. The display will use the M14 material set, the same stack found in the iPhone 17 Pro Max, favoring a proven architecture over a new experimental material set.
Display production is set to begin even as Apple navigates engineering challenges that could impact final assembly timing. Foxconn has already moved into trial production for the device, which is rumored to feature a dual-layer glass structure to help hide the display crease. Apple is also said to be working to finalize a price point for the "iPhone Ultra" that preserves profitability without undercutting its high-end Pro lineup.
