Apple's first foldable smartphone could launch under the "iPhone Ultra" banner, a move that is reportedly prompting the naming and product strategies of its primary competitors in China. According to leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo, domestic manufacturers are considering a shift to the "Ultra" suffix for their upcoming wide-format foldables to align with Apple's expected branding.
The move toward an Ultra tier would signal the device's position at the absolute top of the iPhone lineup. Recent leaks of iPhone Fold dummy units have already revealed a significant departure from Apple's traditional design language, showcasing a book-style form factor with a massive 7.8-inch internal display and a horizontal rear camera bar.
Digital Chat Station notes that Chinese brands intend to go head-to-head with Apple's foldable by matching its screen morphology, hardware specifications, and premium pricing. Separate reports have suggested the device could be powered by the A20 Pro chip and 12GB of RAM, while rivals are expected to deploy their own high-end silicon and enhanced memory configurations.
Display technology will be another primary battleground. Apple has reportedly placed production orders for crease-free display panels that target a physical indentation of less than 0.15mm. These panels may utilize a dual-layer glass structure to protect the OLED material from the mechanical stress of the hinge. Competitors in the region are now seeking to secure similar components to ensure their hardware doesn't feel like a compromise in comparison.
Pricing for this new tier is expected to be aggressive. While some early reports suggested a more conservative approach, current expectations place the foldable's retail price at approximately $2,000. Digital Chat Station says Chinese manufacturers are preparing to match this hyper-premium price point, instead of relying on their usual strategy of undercutting Apple on cost.
The device is also expected to feature a tailored iPad-style interface designed to take full advantage of its larger display. Although engineering snags have reportedly put pressure on the production timeline at Foxconn, the device is still expected to serve as a halo product within Apple's fall lineup.
