Apple's Foldable iPhone Hits Engineering Snags as Testing Enters Critical Stage

Apple is reportedly running into complications during the development of its first foldable iPhone, which could push the device's release back by several months, according to Nikkei Asia. While the hardware was expected to anchor Apple's late-2026 lineup, those plans may now be under pressure as the company encounters issues during the early engineering test phase.

The setbacks are said to be tied to the complex mechanical design of the phone rather than the component shortages currently affecting the broader industry. Sources familiar with the project indicate that Apple is still working to resolve more engineering challenges than expected within its intended timeframe. Although Foxconn recently began trial production for the handset, the mass manufacturing ramp originally targeted for July is now at risk.

A few component suppliers, though not all, have been notified that the production schedule could be pushed back. April is described as a crucial stage in the engineering verification process, with the period through early May considered especially critical for determining whether timelines can be maintained.

Apple has already made moves to adjust its 2026 launch plans to make room for the foldable, including reports that the standard iPhone 18 may not arrive until 2027 as the company prioritizes foldable and Pro hardware and allocates constrained resources.

While the report does not detail the exact technical hurdles, previous rumors point to ambitious design targets. Apple is reportedly aiming for a 0.15mm display crease using a dual-layer glass setup that reduces stress on the OLED panel. We've also seen leaked dummy units suggesting an 8.75mm thickness and a revised button layout to accommodate internal components.

Apple is reportedly targeting an initial production run of about 7 million to 8 million foldable units. While that represents less than 10 percent of its total planned iPhone volume, the company is said to have high expectations for the device's role in driving broader demand. Research firm IDC forecasts that foldable smartphone shipments will grow by around 30 percent in 2026, driven in part by Apple's anticipated entry into the market.

Whether these engineering challenges can be resolved in time remains uncertain, as verification continues through April, a period described as critical for the project. If current solutions fail to fully address the issues, the foldable iPhone's production schedule could slip.
