Apple is reportedly ramping up production of the standard iPhone 17 and keeping the device in production longer than usual, according to a new rumor out of China.
Supply chain chatter from Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital points to an extended manufacturing cycle for the standard iPhone 17. Apple is reportedly ramping up production to ensure strong inventory levels for major shopping events later this year, particularly China's Singles' Day in November. The strategy would make sense given the handset's strong reported performance in the region, where it recently helped Apple reclaim the top spot in China despite an overall market slowdown.
The leaker also claims the standard iPhone 18 could see reduced memory specifications, something they speculate could help Apple lower production costs. Those comments align with previous rumors suggesting Apple may delay the standard iPhone 18 into 2027 and instead launch it alongside the budget iPhone 18e, keeping the fall spotlight focused on Pro models and Apple's rumored foldable iPhone.
Separately, the Weibo account highlighted growing complaints surrounding the aluminum unibody used in the iPhone 17 Pro lineup. Some users have reportedly experienced paint chipping or peeling on the exterior finish. According to the leaker, the issue is being viewed as normal wear associated with the aluminum alloy rather than a manufacturing defect. Buyers considering next year's models should also take note, as the account claims Apple will likely continue using a similar material approach for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
