Google is stripping away the screen for its latest fitness tracker. The company just announced the Fitbit Air, a $99 wearable designed to sit quietly on the wrist while feeding data into Google Health Coach, its personalized wellness platform.
The device itself is a tiny, display-free pebble. It packs the usual array of health sensors, tracking heart rate, blood oxygen, sleep stages, and heart rhythm monitoring with AFib alerts. Because there isn't a screen draining the battery, the Fitbit Air lasts up to a week on a charge. A quick five-minute top-up provides enough power for a full day of use.
Users manage everything through the Google Health app on iOS or Android. The tracker automatically detects common workouts, with workout detection becoming more personalized over time. You can start routines from the app or even take a picture of a gym whiteboard or treadmill console, and Google Health Coach can log the workout for you.
Google's broader push into AI-driven fitness guidance also arrives as Apple reportedly reevaluates its own health coaching ambitions. Apple recently scaled back its own plans for a dedicated AI health coach, choosing instead to slowly fold those types of features into its existing Health app. The move toward screenless wearable hardware also comes amid industry rumors that Apple is developing a wearable AI pendant of its own.
Google built the Fitbit Air to be modular. The central tracker pops out of the default recycled fabric band to fit into different accessories, including a silicone Active Band and a more fashion-oriented Elevated Modern Band. There is also a Stephen Curry Special Edition for $129.99 that features a brown and orange strap with a raised interior pattern designed to improve airflow during intense workouts.
The standard Fitbit Air costs $99.99 and is available to pre-order today, bundling in three months of Google Health Premium. The Special Edition will arrive in stores on May 26.
