Meta has announced a new privacy-focused feature for its artificial intelligence assistant, rolling out Incognito Chat with Meta AI to both WhatsApp and the dedicated Meta AI app.
The feature is built on Meta's Private Processing technology and is designed so conversations remain inaccessible even to Meta itself. Unlike temporary or incognito chat modes offered by competing AI services, Meta says no one — including the company — can read the questions users submit or the responses generated during an Incognito Chat session.
Most major AI platforms still retain temporary conversations for some period of time, even when chat history is disabled. Meta says Incognito Chat differs because conversations are processed inside a secure Trusted Execution Environment using encrypted and attested connections that prevent the company from accessing message contents.
The system is also designed to be stateless, meaning conversations are not stored after processing, while messages disappear by default once the session ends. Meta additionally uses anonymous routing intended to separate a user's identity from the requests being handled.
Meta says the feature is intended for situations where users may hesitate to rely on cloud-based AI systems, including discussions involving health concerns, financial matters, or career advice.
The company also revealed plans for a related feature called Sidechat, arriving later this year on WhatsApp. Protected by the same Private Processing infrastructure, it will let users privately consult Meta AI about an active conversation without disrupting the primary chat thread.
Incognito Chat with Meta AI is rolling out gradually over the coming months. You can download the Meta AI app from the App Store at the link below.
