Apple's newly appointed Chief Hardware Officer Johny Srouji is restructuring the company's hardware division, realigning key teams as part of an effort to speed up development of future devices.
The reorganization also aims to bridge the gap between Apple's custom silicon engineers and the groups responsible for building the physical products. The changes arrive just weeks after Apple announced that John Ternus will take over as CEO in September, a transition that expanded Srouji's role to oversee both hardware technologies and hardware engineering.
According to Bloomberg, the most significant changes involve the product design group, which is responsible for engineering the look, feel, and core capabilities of Apple's devices into products that can be shipped to consumers. Veteran vice president Kate Bergeron is shifting her focus to oversee product reliability and materials across all hardware. Her previous product design duties are being split between two longtime deputies. Shelly Goldberg will now manage Mac product design, while Dave Pakula takes charge of the Apple Watch, iPad, and AirPods. Richard Dinh will continue leading the iPhone product design team.
Bergeron will report to Tom Marieb, who recently succeeded Ternus as head of hardware engineering. Marieb is keeping several key executives under his watch, including Apple Watch engineering head Eugene Kim, electrical engineering lead Deniz Teoman, and Paul Meade. Meade oversees the Vision Products Group, the organization behind Vision Pro that is now focused on glasses and AI devices.
Srouji is also bringing a few key leaders under his direct oversight. Matt Costello, who previously managed home and audio products, will now head a new Ecosystems Platforms and Partnerships team. Kevin Lynch will report directly to Srouji as he continues to run a special projects group developing robotics devices, including a rumored tabletop robotic hub.
Two of Srouji's longtime lieutenants are also taking on expanded responsibilities. Silicon engineering head Sribalan Santhanam is adding oversight of Apple's chip teams in Israel, along with groups focused on advanced packaging and mixed-signal technologies. Zongjian Chen, leader of the Advanced Technologies Group, is assuming control of display engineering, sensor software, and Apple's battery and camera engineering teams. Chen will also lead Apple's long-running effort to develop a noninvasive blood sugar monitor.
