Apple has agreed to hand over its regional financial data to India's antitrust watchdog, advancing a long-running investigation into its App Store practices, according to a report from Reuters.
A confidential order from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) shows Apple committed to supplying the India-specific numbers during a hearing late last month. The company's legal team asked for a final extension until June 25 to submit the documents, which the commission granted.
The agreement follows months of disagreement between Apple and the CCI over the financial disclosures. Apple had previously withheld the financial data while challenging a new Indian law that allows regulators to calculate fines based on global revenue rather than local sales. That legislation opened the door to a potential penalty of up to $38 billion. Apple later accused the agency of overstepping its authority, but the CCI maintained that it only needed Apple's India-specific financial information to continue the proceedings. Last month, a judge overseeing the related court challenge urged Apple to "cooperate" with the investigation.
The antitrust dispute started in 2021 when a non-profit group, Tinder parent Match Group, and several local startups complained about Apple's strict in-app purchasing rules. An investigation concluded in 2024 that Apple had abused its market position in the iPhone apps market.
Apple consistently denies the allegations, arguing that Android completely dominates the Indian smartphone market. While that is true, Apple's footprint is growing rapidly. The iPhone now holds a 9 percent market share in the country, up from 2 percent five years ago. India has also become a critical piece of Apple's global supply chain, handling roughly 25 percent of all iPhone assembly.
With the financials expected by the end of June, the CCI is nearing a final penalty decision. Apple has also been asked to submit any formal objections to the initial investigation findings.
