Apple Watch Readiness Score: How It Works and Which Models Support It
Apple Watch can now give you a single score for how ready you may be for the day ahead. Readiness combines recent activity, sleep, and vital signs, then updates as the day goes on instead of stopping at a morning assessment.

The feature is available on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 for people ages 13 and older. It relies on their new Health Sensing System, so installing watchOS 27 on an older watch does not add it.
Which Apple Watches Have Readiness?
Both Series 12 and Ultra 4 support the same Readiness feature. That includes the different Series 12 sizes and case materials; you do not have to buy a titanium model or spend $799 on an Ultra to get the score.
Apple Watch Series 11 and earlier, Ultra 3 and earlier, and the SE models do not support Apple's Readiness app. Some offer Sleep Score, Vitals, or third-party recovery apps, but those are separate features with different requirements.
If Readiness is your main reason to buy a new watch, the $399 starting-price Series 12 is the less expensive route. Our Series 12 vs. Ultra 4 comparison covers the display, battery, and outdoor features that account for the Ultra premium.
What Goes Into the Score?
Apple groups the inputs into three areas: Activity, Vitals, and Sleep. Activity includes recent active calories, workout effort ratings, and training load. Sleep draws on your recent Sleep Score data.
Vitals includes overnight measurements such as heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, heart-rate variability, and blood oxygen where available, plus daytime heart rate. The system compares these measurements with your recent baseline. Apple says that baseline requires sleeping with the watch on at least seven of the past 49 nights.
The new optical sensor on Series 12 and Ultra 4 measures heart rate every five seconds during the day. Their Health Sensing System can also measure HRV as often as every five minutes, supplying more frequent readings for features such as Recovery HRV.
Readiness brings those signals together. A demanding workout, changes in your usual overnight vitals, and recent sleep can all contribute to the result; it is broader than a sleep grade alone.

What Do the Numbers Mean?
The score runs from 0 to 10. Apple's four labels are Recover for 0–1, Pace Yourself for 2–4, Ready for 5–7, and Go For It for 8–10.
Open Readiness on the watch and tap Activity, Vitals, or Sleep to see more about the contributing areas. That detail is often more useful than treating the number as a verdict. A lower score after an unusually active day and a poor night's sleep gives you context you can recognize in your own routine.
The score can change during the day based on calories burned, naps, and daytime heart rate. The feature is designed to respond to new information, so the afternoon reading can tell a different story from the morning one.

How to Set It Up
Before your first score, check your height, weight, and age in the Fitness app on iPhone. Set up Activity, Sleep, and Overnight Vitals, then wear Series 12 or Ultra 4 to bed for at least seven nights.
Once enough data is available, open the Readiness app on the watch. You can also open Fitness on your iPhone and tap Readiness; Apple notes that you may need to scroll to the bottom of the screen. Its Readiness setup guide walks through the prerequisites.
If you just unboxed the watch and have no score, begin with those setup steps and the overnight baseline. Consistent wear is important to a feature built around your own recent measurements. Find a charging window that lets you keep the watch on overnight, rather than making sleep tracking compete with charging every evening.

Use It as Context, Not Permission
Readiness is a wellness feature. Apple says it does not account for every health factor, including existing conditions and medications, and should not be the sole basis for deciding whether exercise is safe. How you feel and any advice from your clinician still matter.
For everyday use, the helpful part is the combination of a trend and an explanation: what changed in your activity, sleep, or vitals? A high score is not an obligation to push harder, and a low score is a reason to look at the details rather than diagnose a problem from a number.
Readiness is available now on supported watches. The additional AI-powered Health Insights and Longevity Health Age features Apple announced are scheduled for later in 2026, so they are not prerequisites for using the score.
