Resolve Market Research has just completed a comprehensive study examining how the iPad is being used and its effect on other devices.
According to Mashable, the study was conducted online across a nationally representative sample, compared technology owners or people that intend to own devices in four different categories: the iPad, smartphones (including iPhones, Androids and BlackBerrys), e-readers and portable video game devices. The study also focused on how users perceive the iPad both before and after owning the device.
Resolve found that the iPad was more likely to replace a future e-reader or mobile gaming device purchase than a netbook or laptop purchase. They also found that the iPad is an important gateway product for Apple with 37% of respondents who owned or were planning to own an iPad saying that it was or would be their first Apple device.
The top iPad perception was "It is a very expensive toy". The top reason for intending the iPad was "Entertainment" and the top reason for rejecting the iPad was "I don't see the need for it".
