These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 on iOS 5.0.1 without updating the baseband using RedSn0w for Mac. You may want to do this to preserve an unlock from a lower baseband version.

Please note this jailbreak is tethered for every device but the old bootrom iPhone 3GS which means you will need to connect your device to the computer each time you reboot. Also, it may be prudent to save your SHSH Blobs by following this tutorial before continuing if you haven't already.

If you want to jailbreak a lower firmware version you can find the appropriate tutorial here.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w 0.9.9b9d or higher from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the 5.0.1 firmware from here and place it in the Pwnage folder.

Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

I'm getting a corrupt file warning from iTunes 10.5.3 after I go thru the customizing IPSW process in redsn0w. It doesn't seem to like the NO_BB version. Any thoughts? Downgrade to 10.5.1? I'm JB and Using 5.0.1 for the new IPSW I have 4.3.5 and 4.10.01 on Gevey untethered unlock. I am redownloading the restore file and re customizing it in Redsn0w. Will comment back if it changes but any advice would be great.

all good. Re downloaded and customized IPSW via Redsn0w worked with this method exactly as published above. Note: install furiousmod and orona before restarting per applenberry instructions Thanks to all involved at devteam and iclarified for the great work!

sorry: Install furiousmod and Corona (in that order) before following gevey restart tips. The reboot required for Corona allowed the furiousmod to get Gevey going *this assumes you have the sim and gevey sim inserted prior to beginning the whole thing. I have tmobile $30 unlimited data plan & text with 100 min talk time (Wal-mart) Not sure if iphone allows 3g but still, unlocked 5.0.1 with 4.10.01 baseband on EDGE working great

I continuously receive this message, when trying to restore from custom file. The iPhone "iPhone" cannot be restored at this time because the iPhone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable

I'm trying to upgrade a (already jailbroken) iPhone4 with this method. Getting into DFU mode is no problem but at Step Fourteen in the instructions the device doesn't appear in iTunes (10.5.2) - it just doesn't get listed. When running normally the phone shows up in iTunes. Any ideas how this could happen and what I can do about it?

Just figured out the solution You need to run redsnow again & run the jailbreak option (the custom ipsw part only gets the software on board and doesnt jailbreak) Steps to follow: From the first screen on redsnow select jailbreak Once you are finished with the jailbreak process, you will move past the activatin screen automatically

Hello Mark I think I can help you! Try to do the same as before! try this: when you insert your sim card with GEVEY, wait until the button ACCEPT appear! Just click ACCEPT! Then, don't wait the signal bar, it just DOENS'T APPEAR! So, call 112 then TURN ON air plane mode wait until appear that message and turn off air plane mode... and the ''miracle'' will appear!

3gs. I fallowed the steps perfectly. run redsnow made the NO_BB. not as much luck as "MrTopas". I go to itunes to (option click) choose the NO_BB but itunes says "device isn't eligible for build". any guess? ...I'm trying to update from 4.2.1 with TU. ive gotten it to work on 4.2.1 but I want to update to 5.0 or 5.0.1 or at least back to 4.3.5 like it was working fine (no unlock no jb) before i stupidly clicked update on itunes, then it said "invalid sim" bla. one thing, i don not have the shsh in TU for 5.0 just 5.0.1 and 4.1 which is weird cause i can get it to boot to 4.2.1 like I said above. any help/advice? been looking online for 2 weeks now!! -Thanks!!
UTAH
UTAH - December 16, 2011 at 11:18am
First i should say Thank you for your time!!! My contract is up and I had been using my 3gs 4.3.5 as an iTouch with basic functionality, camera, notes, games and safari wifi. My phone was never jb or unlocked before! The whole reason Im in this mess is because I (stupidly) clicked update iphone in itunes on dec 1st (from a fully functional 4.3.5 to get the new 5.0.1) and my itunes said "Sim not supported" (yes it was the latest iTunes version). So I have gone through all the steps to jb and unlock with redsn0w and tu, when I never desired any of this!! My phone 3gs 05.16.05bb, I had it working running 4.2.1, with redsn0w9.9b8 jb, (if this helps Tiny Umbrella 4.1 shsh and 5.0.1shsh). It was working fine as an iTouch/wifi device, though I never "set up as new phone" in iTunes inorder to avoid losing all my 4.3.5 back ups (because I want to one day get back to where I was before the dark dark day of dec 1st). I turned it off, like i had before and went to "just boot" and i get a white screen. Issue at hand in redsn0w i point to the 4.2.1 ipsw, select just boot, put into DFU, redsn0w says its done, but all I get is a white screen. I would just jb it again but I spent some time getting contacts and apps back on it, and if i cant get the latest ios then I'd rather keep what Ive done in 4.2.1 I have tried many many times with redsn0w (even trying different versions like 9.9b5) running with TU and without, with itunes running and without, restart computer, remove usb devices. Ideally I'd like to have 5.01 unlocked. But I would gladly settle for 4.2.1 working like I had it for a few days. Though I dont want ipad bb because i dont want to lose my gps (forever?). I'm an artist that uses Square Up from time to time, and the location-receipt is very important to weary credit-card-on-a-phone customers. Im not a hacker but I'd like to think Im not a complete noob ether. I've been searching and researching for the last 15 days straight, hoping for a solution. Side note: my time machine backups are not available as i only keep the last back up (small HD), which unfortunately is from last week the 10th. Thanks to all who read this. A many many thanks to any helpful reply. Thank you! Thank you! -BIORIN
