iSpy Can Identify What You're Typing From 60m Away [Video]

Computer researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have developed a program called iSpy which can determine what's being typed on a smartphone from nearly 200 feet away, according to NewScientist.

Frahm and Fabian Monrose, also of UNC-Chapel Hill, have built a program, dubbed iSpy, that can identify text typed on a touchscreen from video footage of the screen or even its reflection in windows or sunglasses. Video from an ordinary mobile phone camera can be used to spy on a person from 3 metres away. And a snoop with a digital SLR camera that shoots HD video could read a screen up to 60 metres away.

iSpy exploits the magnified keys feature of recent touchscreen devices. Letters on iOS and Android keyboards pop up in larger bubbles when pressed. The program analyzes the video footage taken from afar and identifies which keys are being pressed. Since some popups overlap (like e and r) the program assigns an accuracy probability to each detected letter and is correct more than 90% of the time. "We were surprised at how well that worked," Frahm said.

Don't think we have much to worry about. The software is just doing something anyone can do, only quicker. If you can record close enough to see the buttons pressed you can already see what they're writing.

They posted it here. They could/should have done the legwork for us. They make money for people visiting their site, it's a job to keep us happy... They should have upped the video for us...

That's true... But if you want a service to get better you complain and try to do so in somewhat of a constructive format. Anyway, I'm not going to defend myself any further. If you aren't bothered about the content delivery system on the site then don't say anything! If like me, you are bothered then let them know!

I don't run windows vista. But apart from that it's because I expect them to be able to handle something as simple as rendering flash as HTML5. I wrote a tool to do it months back, tool me about a week!
