BlackBerry has just announced that it will release BBM for iOS and Android devices this summer.
If you’re already a fan of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), we’ve got some exciting news designed to make it easier for you to connect with your entire mobile social network. BlackBerry plans to make BBM, our wildly popular mobile messaging service, available for the first time to iOS and Android users this summer, (subject to approval by Google Play and the Apple App Store, as applicable). This means that, once available, you can welcome your friends and family using these other mobile platforms to connect over BBM and share in the Team BlackBerry love.
In the first version of multi-platform BBM, iOS and Android users are expected to be able to experience the following BBM features:
● The immediacy of BBM chats ● Multi-person chats ● Voice note sharing ● BlackBerry Groups, where BBM users are able to set up groups of up to 30 people and share calendar, photos, files and more
BBM is loved by customers for its “D” and “R” statuses, which show up in chats to let people know with certainty that their message has been delivered and read. It provides customers with a high level of control and privacy over who they add to their contact list and how they engage with them, as invites are two-way opt-in. iOS and Android users would be able to add their contacts through PIN, email, SMS or QR code scan, regardless of platform. Android users would also be able to connect using a compatible NFC-capable device.
Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President, Software Product Management and Ecosystem, at BlackBerry had this to say: “For BlackBerry, messaging and collaboration are inseparable from the mobile experience, and the time is definitely right for BBM to become a multi-platform mobile service. BBM has always been one of the most engaging services for BlackBerry customers, enabling them to easily connect while maintaining a valued level of personal privacy. We’re excited to offer iOS and Android users the possibility to join the BBM community.”

This would be a game changer for my country, Indonesia (arguably a nation w/ the most active BBM users to date). To most Indonesians, BBM is their life. Small to medium-sized businesses won't run without it. We don't just add friends, but also clients. We would even ask for BBM PIN number instead of our phone #. So yeah, this is HUGE for Indonesia. Finally I can see my friends ditching their BB for iPhones! That'd be the ultimate satisfaction...

BBM works in extreme real time, its a little faster than whatsapp which is great, but only if your phone as a LED indicator to say there's a new message. Dont see it working as well on ios

This would have been awesome news 2 years ago but I would have thought they are now a bit late in the game to finally release multiplatform messaging.

Admittedly, I am quite excited. I am an apple fan, always will be, but everybody's always going on about bbm. It will be nice to finally be able to see what all the fuss is about! hopefully it will be free?? Please???

Wow really rim?? Your 3 years to late. And you already tried to do it with live profile (remember that?) this would have only been useful when you still had a large presence. However while I do love bbm I don't know anyone who still has one lol. Now given people will love bbm groups and the d and r feature as former bb users loved..there's just to many apps that do that stuff already.

Where's the box to be the first to find out when BB goes out of business?
