Apple is working to making the emoji character set more diverse, according to Katie Cotton, Vice President of Worldwide Corporate Communications for Apple. The current set has been criticized for having very few non-Caucasian icons to choose from.

MTV sent an email to Apple CEO Tim Cook asking him if they were planning to expand the character set.

Their email was forward to Cotton who replied:

“Tim forwarded your email to me. We agree with you. Our emoji characters are based on the Unicode standard, which is necessary for them to be displayed properly across many platforms. There needs to be more diversity in the emoji character set, and we have been working closely with the Unicode Consortium in an effort to update the standard.”

Apple didn't provide an information on whether an emoji update was imminent; however, if you follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS we'll keep you up to date.

You can find instructions on how to enable the emoji character set on your device here.
