BlackBerry Touts BBM Over iMessage Following Spam Report

Posted August 23, 2014 at 3:32am by iClarified
Following reports that iMessage accounts for over 30% of all mobile spam, BlackBerry has posted an article entitled, 'Why BBM Isn’t Vulnerable to iMessage's Reported Spam Problem'.

Here's the company's five reasons why BBM is better than iMessage for preventing spam:

-----
1) BBM is architected in a way that protects our 85 million users against spammers. iMessage works off of phone number or Apple ID. Anyone who has your number or Apple ID can send you messages whether you want them to or not. With BBM, users have a lot more control due to our “invite and accept” paradigm. In other words, both parties need to be mutually committed to being contacts in order to send and receive messages.

2) BBM gives you control. There’s no spam on BBM due to its self-policing system. Users are in control of their contact list and there is no way to send a message without being contacts. You can’t control someone showing up to your house, but you don’t have to open the door. With BBM someone can request to be added to your list, but you don’t have to accept their invite.

3) BBM Protected ups the security ante. Privacy is the main issue with iMessage and spam. BBM protects your privacy by only allowing users to send messages to approved contacts. Our secure enterprise messaging service, BBM Protected, takes it a step further by adding an advanced layer of encryption. This ensures your messages aren’t vulnerable to spying or hacking while being transmitted.

4) BBM empowers you to protect yourself from unsolicited messages. On the rare chance that you get spam or an unwanted ad, you only need to block the person from your contact list and refuse further attempts to reach you in the future.

5) BBM’s anti-spam features work on any platform. BBM is structured so that each user has a unique PIN that’s unique to him or her, regardless of what device is used. Here’s the added bonus: BBM is a true multi-platform network that allows you to securely message users on BlackBerry, iOS, Windows Phone and Android. That’s virtually 100% of all smartphones and tablets out there today. iMessage is only available on Apple products.

All these 5 points mentioned in the article share the same point that BBM uses add requests, so its all the same meaning after all, they just expanded the idea to make a lot of points against iMessage lol.

Never gotten iMessage spam. Didn't know it was such a HUGE problem. This is apparently the best that Blackberry can think up to save a dead platform? Marketing department is stretched a bit thin with this idea.

Who cares about BBM? BBM isn't any safer from spam, so who cares?

Point 1, 2, 3 talk basically the same thing again coated in different words ... except for the encryption bit. Point 4 is available on iMessage too - blocking unwanted sources ... Point 5 - would u want another PIN (BBM ID) to remember or would u prefer to use ur phone number ... it is like a way of saying BBM is better than SMS this release by BB sounds pretty useless .. no actual substance.

Also basically 2 3 4 and 5 are talking points about the same feature. And number 1 isn't anything bad against iMessage. Btw the way bbm encrypts your messages... Not truly encrypted. There's only one key, the master key, and everything is encrypted the same way with that key, people have already hacked blackberry(or the key leaked) and those people who have the key now can basically sniff your traffic and then decrypt your bbm messages. You "bbm pin" is basically just a phone number or id for people to send the messages to.

Who even uses bbm? That's like saying you should use Facebook instead of texting. iMessage wasn't meant to be a secure method of messaging people. Hell I could start randomly texting lots of people and emailing lots of people by making up random numbers and email addresses, there's no difference between text and iMessage. iMessage just makes it so that if someone is packet sniffing your phone they won't be able to decrypt your iMessage but they will be able to intercept your text and read them because it's sent non encrypted. The beauty of iMessage is that we can text people using their number and don't have to download a separate app and create an account then make all your friends do that and also add them all using new account information... Too much of a hassle. No thank you bbm, if I need something encrypted and secured, I'll pgp encrypt it and email it. That's safe.

Quick question. Who gives a shit about your os? A besides why not just ignore the messages, or even delete them? I don't mind doing that.
