Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that a new research & developer center in Yokohama, near Tokyo, will open later this year. The facility will focus on developing AI and other technology. Cook says its a center for 'deep engineering' and will be 'very different' from the R&D facility in China.
"I cannot tell you the specifics," Cook said in an interview with Nikkei. "The specific work is very different."
Notably, Cook says AI "horizontal in nature, running across all products" and is used "in ways that most people don't even think about."
He also said that "We want the AI to increase your battery life", recommend music to Apple Music subscribers, and "help you remember where you parked your car."
While discussing Apple Pay's launch in Japan, Cook said he wants to see a move to a cashless society. "We would like to be a catalyst for taking cash out of the system," he said. "We don't think the consumer particularly likes cash."

That would be too easy. Apple's strategy is to make it harder for competitors to copy them.
