Check out this video from developer Jelmer Verhoog that puts a Tesla Model 3 in his driveway using Apple ARKit.
"I'm very excited about the Tesla Model 3 and created a small augmented reality app to experience it from close up. Filmed directly through an iPhone7 it felt surprisingly real to walk around the car. I added support to play with the lights, control it (by swiping the iPhone's touchscreen) and configure it (just colors for now). Next would be to add custom wheels, more advanced lighting & reflections (especially the rims) and opening doors and checking out the interior would be possible as well."
Using ARKit, the iPhone and iPad can analyze the scene presented by the camera and find horizontal planes such tables and floors. It can then place objects on feature points. ARKit also makes use of the camera sensor to estimate the total amount of light available in a scene and applies the correct amount of lighting to virtual objects.
