Apple may equip future generation HomePod smart speakers with Face ID facial recognition features, according to a Nikkei report.

HomePod manufacturer Inventec Appliances hinted at the possibility on Friday.

"We see trends that engineers are designing smart speakers that will not only come with voice recognition but also incorporate features such as facial and image recognition," President David Ho told reporters after the company's earnings conference. "Such AI-related features are set to make people's lives more convenient and to make the product easier to use." He added, however, that he was unsure at the moment whether smart speakers with more AI features in the future would become a hit in the market.

Although Ho didn't specify that he was talking about the Apple HomePod, analysts believe that was the device he was referring to. Inventec is currently the manufacturer of Apple's AirPods and upcoming HomePod. It also makes speakers for Sonos.

The HomePod is scheduled to launch this December. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, or RSS for updates.

I’m sorry, but a ‘secure’ speaker on a secure private network doesn’t protect anyone, it simply limits which family members and friends can use it (ie no non-Apple users are allowed!). That’s not a feature, it’s a limitation.

Look at that, my IOS 11 Is and As are fine, but I can’t type asterisks or quotes. That’s a new twist on the existing bug.
