Apple is expected to purchase 250 to 270 million display panels for the iPhone this year, according to a DigiTimes report.

Apple's purchases of OLED panels in 2018 will reach 110-130 million units, including 70-80 million 5.9-inch units for the current iPhone X and an upgraded version of the same size. The remaining will be 40-50 million 6.5-inch OLED panels for the production of a less expensive model, said the sources.

The company will purportedly order 60 to 70 million 6.1-inch all-screen LTPS panels for a new iPhone model expected this fall. Additionally, it's expected to buy 60 to 70 million LTPS panels in 4-inch, 4.7-inch, and 5.5-inch sizes for the iPhone SE, iPhone 7, and iPhone 8.

Samsung will likely remain the primary supplier of OLED panels to Apple, says IHS Markit. However, LG Display is working to secure orders for a new 6.5-inch OLED model rumored for release this fall.

Japan Display, Sharp, and LG Display will be main suppliers of LTPS panels to Apple this year, sources said.

Yesterday, a report revealed that Apple has been secretly working to develop microLED display technology in-house, reducing its need to be purchase panels from other suppliers.
