Code findings in the latest macOS Tahoe 26.1 beta suggest Apple's next Pro Display XDR will finally get a built-in camera, a feature notably absent from the original $4,999 monitor. The discovery, highlighted by 9to5Mac, points to a key hardware upgrade for Apple's high-end display.
The macOS beta reportedly includes two code references that point to the new hardware: "Pro Display XDR Camera" and "Pro Display XDR Desk View Camera." The reference to "Desk View" suggests the built-in camera will be an ultra-wide lens that supports features like Center Stage, which automatically keeps users framed during video calls.
Apple's current Pro Display XDR, released in 2019, does not have an integrated webcam. In contrast, the less expensive $1,599 Studio Display includes a 12MP ultra-wide camera with Center Stage.
Other rumored hardware changes for an updated professional display could include a higher 7K resolution, Thunderbolt 4 or 5 ports, and improved display technology. Recent code leaks have already pointed to a new Studio Display, identified as J427, with a second unknown display model also in the works.
