Apple's hardware roadmap for 2026 is shaping up to be one of its busiest in years, with the company planning a major push into artificial intelligence and new product categories like foldables and smart home devices, according to a newsletter from Mark Gurman to subscribers.
The first half of the year is expected to be busy, with a new iPhone 17e, an entry-level iPad with an A18 chip, and an iPad Air with an M4 processor all on the way. M5-powered versions of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are also slated for that window, along with new Mac monitors.
The spring is also expected to mark the launch of Apple's first smart display, which will reportedly come in both speaker-base and wall-mounted versions. This release is timed to coincide with a major Siri overhaul and should lay the groundwork for a broader smart home security ecosystem, including cameras, later in the year.
As early as late 2026, a major redesign for the MacBook Pro could arrive, bringing M6 Pro and M6 Max chips, a thinner chassis, and a touchscreen with OLED technology. Gurman notes that M5 upgrades for the Mac mini and Mac Studio are also planned for next year, while a new iPad mini and a refresh to the iPad Pro are not expected until 2027.
Gurman's report also points to several challenges. The company is betting heavily on its new Siri, which could lean on Google's Gemini model to introduce AI-powered search features. Apple is also arriving late to the smart home and foldable markets, where competitors like Google and Amazon.com Inc. have already established a strong presence.
