The second developer beta of macOS Tahoe 26.2 introduces a clever new feature called Edge Light, which turns your Mac's display into a virtual ring light for video calls. Designed to enhance video quality in low-light environments, the feature adds a smart, adjustable light source directly around your screen.
Found alongside other video conferencing tools like Portrait mode and Studio Light, Edge Light works with any app—including FaceTime, Zoom, and WebEx—to softly illuminate your face and create a more flattering appearance on camera.
More than a simple border effect, Edge Light uses the Neural Engine in Apple silicon to detect your face in the frame and adjust the lighting accordingly. The Mac's Image Signal Processor fine-tunes brightness to match your environment, while users can manually adjust the color temperature between warm and cool tones.
The effect is also intelligent enough to move out of the way, automatically receding when your cursor nears the edge of the screen. Supported on all Macs with Apple silicon and on the Studio Display, the feature can be set to enable automatically on 2024 or newer models when the system detects low ambient light.
Edge Light is available for testing now in the developer beta and is expected to roll out to all users later this year.
