OpenAI has rolled out a major update to its image generation tools, introducing a new ChatGPT Images experience powered by the GPT Image 1.5 model. The upgrade focuses on faster generation, more precise edits, and significantly improved consistency when modifying existing images.
According to OpenAI, the new model can generate images up to four times faster than the previous version while doing a better job of preserving key details such as lighting, composition, and facial likeness. This allows users to make targeted changes to an uploaded image, like adjusting clothing or replacing a background, without unintentionally altering unrelated elements.
A major emphasis of the update is edit reliability. OpenAI says the model now follows instructions more closely, changing only what is requested while keeping the rest of the image intact across multiple edits. This enables more believable clothing and hairstyle try-ons, cleaner stylistic transformations, and practical edits that maintain the original look and feel of an image.
Alongside the model upgrade, OpenAI has launched a dedicated Images section within the ChatGPT interface on both web and mobile. The new workspace offers preset styles, filters, and trending ideas designed to help users get started quickly without crafting complex prompts. Users can also continue generating new images while others are still processing, making it easier to explore multiple ideas at once.
The underlying engine also delivers noticeable improvements in text rendering. GPT Image 1.5 handles smaller and denser text more reliably, making it better suited for layouts such as posters, infographics, mock newspapers, and marketing visuals where legibility matters. OpenAI notes that instruction following has improved as well, allowing the model to better preserve relationships between elements in more complex compositions.
The new ChatGPT Images experience is rolling out globally starting today and is available to all ChatGPT users. Developers can also access the same capabilities through the API under the GPT Image 1.5 model, which OpenAI says offers image inputs and outputs at roughly 20 percent lower cost than the previous version.
