OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, a new web browser for macOS that deeply integrates its artificial intelligence chatbot. The browser is designed to assist users directly on any webpage, understand their context, and automate tasks without needing to switch between tabs.
The browser, called ChatGPT Atlas, integrates the AI chatbot at a foundational level. Users can open a sidebar on any page to have ChatGPT summarize or analyze content. The AI is also available in any text field for inline writing help. A new feature called Browser Memories allows ChatGPT to remember details from sites you visit to provide smarter suggestions and more contextual chat responses. OpenAI says this feature is optional and user-controlled.
A new "agent mode" in Atlas, available as a preview for paid subscribers, lets ChatGPT take actions on a user's behalf. It can open tabs and click through websites to perform tasks like researching a topic or adding items to a shopping cart. The company says it has built-in safeguards, such as pausing on sensitive sites, but notes that agent capabilities still carry risks.
The launch comes as Apple continues to deepen its partnership with OpenAI, using its models to handle complex queries for Siri and other Apple Intelligence features. The collaboration has become particularly notable as Apple works through its own AI challenges, with its most advanced Siri features now delayed until 2026. The launch also comes as OpenAI expands into hardware, having recently acquired an AI device startup from former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
ChatGPT Atlas is available for macOS starting today for all user tiers, with versions for Windows, iOS, and Android coming soon. The browser can import bookmarks, saved passwords, and browsing history from other browsers to ease the transition.
