Apple's push to hide the iPhone's front-facing sensors beneath the display is running into development hurdles, according to a new report. Instead of delivering a seamless all-screen design in the near future, the company is still expected to rely on a smaller Dynamic Island for its upcoming Pro models.
The latest update comes from the Weibo account Fixed Focus Digital, a source that regularly tracks Apple's manufacturing activity. The post says Apple's progress on under-display technology is not going smoothly, with a significant gap still remaining before the company can achieve a true all-screen design. As a result, shrinking the Dynamic Island remains the most likely direction for the next hardware cycle.
The update adds context to a series of mixed reports surrounding the iPhone 18 Pro. In December, a separate leaker claimed Apple had begun testing under-display Face ID, raising the possibility of a redesign that would replace the current cutout with a much smaller punch-hole. More recent supply chain leaks, however, have pointed to a more conservative outcome.
Earlier this month, another report indicated Apple could delay under-display Face ID for the iPhone 18 Pro, with the device expected to retain a largely unchanged front design. That report also noted Apple had explored reducing the size of the cutout by roughly 35 percent, rather than eliminating it entirely.
That lines up with Apple's typical rollout strategy. The company often tests major hardware changes across multiple generations before committing to a visible redesign, especially when the change affects core features like Face ID. In this case, shrinking the Dynamic Island would allow Apple to refine the underlying technology without introducing risk to a flagship release.
For now, the iPhone 18 Pro, which recently entered mass production testing, is expected to keep the familiar interface in a slightly more compact form.
