It is getting much harder to find a Mac mini or Mac Studio as inventory across retail channels continues to dry up. While it is common for supplies to dip ahead of a hardware refresh, this particular shortage appears to be driven by a surge in demand for machines used to run local AI agents. These "headless" Macs are increasingly being purchased for workloads involving tools like OpenClaw, which is adding further pressure to an already constrained supply.
The availability issues are especially noticeable when looking at custom configurations. Customers attempting to order a Mac mini or Studio with additional memory through Apple's online storefront are encountering shipping delays that stretch for weeks or even months. Mark Gurman describes the situation as unprecedented, noting that even simple memory upgrades are being affected. These delays are tied to an industry-wide memory shortage that has already started pushing up prices across the broader PC market. Apple is now balancing reduced production of current models with the need to prepare for its next generation of desktop hardware.
Despite the current supply issues, Apple still plans to refresh its desktop lineup later this year. M5-powered versions of both the Mac mini and Mac Studio are expected, following the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro launch earlier this spring. While these updates were on the roadmap long before the recent surge in demand for local AI hosting, the new chips should be better suited for the kinds of workloads now driving interest in these machines.
Apple has also confirmed it will begin assembling the Mac mini in Texas later this year at an expanded facility in Houston. The move aligns with the company's broader manufacturing strategy, though it is unlikely to have an immediate impact on current availability. Supply remains constrained by global memory shortages and elevated demand that has caught much of the industry by surprise.
