Apple could drop support for the iPhone 11 and second-generation iPhone SE with iOS 27 later this year. A leaked compatibility list circulating on Chinese social media indicates the upcoming software update will require an iPhone 12 or newer to install.
The details come from leaker Instant Digital on Weibo, a source that has shared accurate details about Apple's plans in the past. According to the post, the iPhone 12 series would remain supported for another year, joining newer devices including the iPhone 13, 14, 15, and 16 lineups. The recently launched iPhone 17e is naturally supported, as is the third-generation iPhone SE and the flagship iPhone 17 models.
By excluding the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, and the 2020 iPhone SE, Apple would effectively set the A14 Bionic chip as the baseline for its next major operating system. If this pans out, it means Apple is cutting older phones from the update list for the second year in a row, after leaving the iPhone XS and XR behind last fall.
The higher hardware baseline aligns with what Apple is reportedly planning for this release. The company is expected to roll out a major overhaul of Siri that turns the assistant into a proper conversational chatbot. Apple is also testing quality-of-life interface adjustments, such as a systemwide opacity slider for the Liquid Glass design and new undo controls for Home Screen customization.
It's unclear if all iOS 27 features will be available on the oldest supported hardware. Apple frequently restricts processor-heavy tools like Apple Intelligence to its most recent devices, meaning iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 owners will likely miss out on the most advanced capabilities even if they can install the core update.
Apple will officially detail its software roadmap and confirm device compatibility at WWDC26 on June 8.
