Apple Doubles MacBook Neo Production, But Fresh Chips Will Hurt Margins [Report]

Apple is doubling its production target for the MacBook Neo to 10 million units to keep up with strong consumer demand. The aggressive push to get more of the entry-level laptops onto store shelves will reportedly require Apple to order a fresh batch of A18 Pro chips, a shift that could significantly alter the cost structure of the budget-friendly machine.

Wait times for the notebook have slipped to nearly four weeks as the device proves to be a major hit. CEO Tim Cook recently acknowledged the resulting supply constraints during the company's latest earnings call, noting that Apple underestimated the level of enthusiasm for the $599 machine. The resulting sales volume helped drive Apple's best fiscal second-quarter for Mac revenue since the pandemic. The laptop has emerged as a legitimate alternative to Chromebooks and low-end Windows PCs, helping draw more students and enterprise users into the macOS ecosystem. To meet demand, Apple has reportedly instructed assembly partners Quanta and Foxconn to rapidly expand factory capacity across China and Vietnam.

Building more units could also create a silicon supply challenge. According to a supply chain report, the MacBook Neo achieved its aggressive entry price by utilizing "downbinned" A18 Pro chips originally manufactured for the iPhone 16 Pro. The chips are produced using TSMC's advanced N3E process, with the initial production run beginning more than two years ago. Some units reportedly contained GPU cores that could not operate at full specification. Instead of discarding those chips, Apple disabled the problematic components and repurposed them for the MacBook Neo, allowing the laptop to ship with a five-core GPU configuration.

The report suggests Apple may now need to order a fresh batch of A18 Pro processors directly from TSMC to support the expanded 10 million unit target. Most of these newly manufactured chips would be fully functional six-core GPU variants rather than downbinned parts. To maintain performance consistency across the lineup, Apple would likely disable one of the GPU cores through software.

Using newly manufactured chips instead of previously downbinned inventory could raise the overall cost of producing the notebook. Apple previously faced a difficult decision over whether to let the laptop remain supply constrained in order to preserve margins or absorb higher component costs to keep the product widely available. The company appears to have chosen volume. However, the timing is particularly challenging, as Apple is also dealing with an ongoing global memory shortage that is driving up DRAM pricing across the broader computer industry.

To offset the financial impact of rising component costs, Apple could eventually adjust the MacBook Neo lineup. The notebook is currently offered in a 256GB base model for $599 and a 512GB version for $699. One possibility mentioned in the report involves discontinuing the cheaper configuration entirely to help protect margins. Apple recently took a similar approach with its desktop lineup, quietly pulling the base $599 Mac mini from its online store and making $799 the new starting price. The report also suggests Apple could introduce additional color options to help maintain interest in the lineup.

For now, the base model remains available to purchase, with Amazon currently discounting the laptop to $589.99. Buyers looking to monitor inventory levels and track future discounts across the lineup can use the iClarified Mac Price Tracker.
