Apple has announced the rollout of end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging in beta, bringing a major security upgrade to cross-platform texting between iPhone and Android users.
The feature is now live for iPhone users running iOS 26.5 on supported carriers, provided the recipient is using an Android device with the latest version of Google Messages. Apple noted that it led a cross-industry effort alongside Google to build end-to-end encryption into the standard, effectively securing the modern replacement for traditional SMS.
When encryption is active, texts and media cannot be intercepted or read while traveling between devices. A small lock icon will appear inside RCS chats to verify the connection is secure. The protection is turned on by default and will automatically apply to both new and existing conversations as carriers continue to expand support.
Apple had been actively testing the complex interoperability required for the feature during the recent iOS 26.5 beta cycle. While the update closes a massive privacy gap for messaging outside the ecosystem, the company emphasized that iMessage was built with privacy in mind from the start and remains the best way to communicate between Apple hardware.
