Apple has released revised first developer betas for iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5, replacing the initial versions seeded earlier this week. The updated builds (23F5043k) continue Apple's testing of new features alongside changes required by European Union regulations.
The 26.5 cycle introduces a new Suggested Places feature in Maps, using recent searches and local trends to recommend destinations. It also lays the groundwork for local advertisements expected to launch this summer. Code within the beta indicates that these clearly labeled ads will appear in search results and within the new suggestions interface based on a user's location and search terms.
Apple has also re-enabled end-to-end encryption for RCS conversations between iPhone and Android users. This security feature was previously tested during the 26.4 beta cycle but was notably removed from the final public release last month. A default toggle for encryption is now enabled in the Messages section of the Settings app, keeping cross-platform chats private so they can't be read or intercepted by outside parties.
For users in the European Union, Apple is testing a range of new interoperability features for third-party wearables to meet Digital Markets Act requirements. This includes proximity pairing for earbuds, making it possible to connect with a simple one-tap setup similar to AirPods. Apple is also working on support for forwarding notifications and Live Activities to non-Apple smartwatches. However, the system currently limits these notifications to one connected device at a time, meaning enabling them for a third-party wearable will disable them on a paired Apple Watch.
The update also streamlines how accessories like the Magic Keyboard interact with the iPhone, automatically establishing a Bluetooth connection when first connected via USB-C. The Transfer to Android tool has been updated with granular options for message attachments, letting users choose to migrate data from the last 30 days, one year, or their entire history.
Despite expectations for a rebuilt Siri, this beta does not yet include the expected generative Siri features, which are reportedly facing delays until a later system release. Other smaller additions include a new Inuktitut keyboard layout and references to upcoming awards in the Apple Books app.
