Microsoft vs. Apple: The History of Computing [InfoGraphic]

Manolution has published an incredibly detailed timeline of events and stock prices throughout the historic battle between Microsoft and Apple.

Despite maintaining dominance of the OS market for over three decades, Microsoft’s stocks continue to trade at or below their first ever public value of $27.50 (at closing on 3/13/1986).

Thanks to Apple’s extremely successful ventures into various hand-held gadget markets (namely the iPod, iPhone and iPad) Apple’s stock continues to rise, trading at over $300 more than that of Microsoft’s as of 6/6/2011.

Manolution predicts the gap in stock pricing between the two companies will continue to grow for the foreseeable future.

Lol, definitely no need for me. These OS's do not directly affect one another and the timeline above is not even implying that they do. Apple had a computer built before MS had an operating system. MS had a better sales pitch in later years and won it's fame in the corporate world. Apple never came back around until the iPod, iPhone, and in recent years, OS X. Technically, Micrsoft is still kicking their tail because of....... Drum Roll Please........Corporate Businesses, nor the government, can use a Mac. Active Directory intergration barely exists on Mac

Just a fun fact, the only reason that Apple is as successful as it is today is because of Steve Jobs. Apple was tanking after he left and it wasn't until he came back and released the iPod (he worked very closely with the iPod and it was because of his designs, GUI, and ease of use that it became so successful) and all the products after that Apple came back from being close to the grave. Steve Jobs is the only reason Apple is the company that it is today (I'm not knocking all the hardworking people at Apple, but without Steve Apple would be struggling).

the only thing they leave out of the whole 'stock value' column is the total number of shares. i'm sure as time goes on (while microsoft's stock tumbles) the number of shares has also risen, that also contributes to the lowering of stock value. apple has less shares, which makes their shares that much more valuable.

I was thinking the same thing when I looked at this, I wish they showed the number of shares for each company, it would give a better understanding of the numbers. I remember when I used to hate Apple back in the day, now I'm a fan of both, it's as you say, they each have their own advantages and disadvantages and I think they do a pretty good job at equaling eachother out.
