How to Install Mac OS X Lion From the Mac App Store [Video]

These are video and text instructions on how to install Mac OS X Lion from the Mac App Store. Before beginning make sure to backup all your important files.

The first steps in the video show the Mac App Store purchase, which Apple has replaced with the free download below.



Step One
On a Mac that can run Mac OS X Lion, open Apple's How to download and install macOS page in Safari and click Lion 10.7 under 'Download via web browser'. The InstallMacOSX.dmg disk image downloads to your Downloads folder. Apple no longer sells Mac OS X Lion in the Mac App Store; this download is free.


Step Two
Double-click InstallMacOSX.dmg to open it, then double-click InstallMacOSX.pkg and follow the onscreen instructions. This puts the Install Mac OS X Lion app in your Applications folder. If the Mac isn't compatible with Mac OS X Lion, the package won't complete.

Step Three
Open your Applications folder and double-click Install Mac OS X Lion. When the install wizard appears, click the Continue button to begin.


Step Four
Read through the Software License Agreement and click the Agree button.


Click the Agree button again from the popup window to confirm your selection.


Step Five
The installer will attempt to detect the drive to install to. If you want to install Mac OS X Lion on a different drive click the Show All Disks button.

To begin installation on the selected drive click the Install button.


Step Six
After a few minutes of preparation the computer will reboot.




Step Seven
Once your computer has restarted the installation will begin. This process will take about 30 minutes.


You'll be informed when Mac OS X Lion is installed successfully and your computer will automatically reboot again.


Step Eight
Once your computer has restarted the second time you will be ready to go on your new installation of Mac OS X Lion.


A setup assistant window will appear to help you learn the new scrolling direction default in Lion. You can change this in System Preferences if you so desire.
