New photos of Apple's alleged mini dock connector cable compared to a micro USB cable show that the two connectors are almost identical in size. Apple is expected to debut the connector with the iPhone 5.
Besides being smaller, it reportedly lacks a required orientation allowing you to insert the connector without worrying about which side is right side up.
The new connector has eight visible and likely uses the frame as a ninth grounding pin.
Apple will offer dock connector adapters for those who want to use their old accessories with their new device.

Most of us are questioning why it's not micro-usb. Not why it's smaller...

At least the OTHER end didn't change any, which would require me to buy another adapter for my computer, or worse yet, buy another computer!
Maybe that is being saved for the iphone 7. Ya know, can only sync with an apple computr via cyberlink.

I believe you will be able to use a micro-USB wire for charging purposes only, on the same port. This allows Apple to comply with the regulations in place in Europe for standardized charging cables. This is evolution, not revolution.

With the exposed contacts, we'll see how long that cable lasts.
