automatically through you Settings app, you will need to manalluy install iOS 6 GM (Golden Master). You can see my instructions here. Some of the new features that came with the Golden Master were not revealed or available before.

I downloaded the update but when I click it, it asks how I want to open it. It doesn't seem to open the IPSW file correctly. How do I fix this?

You need to open iTunes and plug in your phone or whatever your trying to update to ios 7. Then goto the button that says check for updates and press alt/option on the MAC or Alt on the pc and press check for updates. If you press the right keys it will open a window asking you to point to the ispw or update you want to update to. Find the ispw file and choose open or double click it. That is all you should have to do. Don't unplug the device until your told to.

OK so on windows you click the shift key then click on check for updates and find the ispw file you want to use. Don't click restore because if you don't do that properly you wont get a activation on iOS 7. You can just update to ios 7 the way your phone is at the time before you began this process. If for some reason you screwed up and restored then tried to update without finishing the entire restore you can just restore back to ios 6 again and let it finish until your phone is activated where you can make phone calls. Once you have done that start over but only click check for updates while pressing Shift or option key(depending on what operating system your using) then choose the ios 7 .ispw file you downloaded.
