They are losing market share, so they have to stay in the news. They want someone to release a jailbreak for iOS 10.2 so they can block it in the betas. The DMCA ruled it was perfectly legal to jailbreak their devices, they have lost millions in phone sales because they continue to block a jailbreak that a user has to install. The phone for the most part has not changed in 10 years. The phone may be faster, however ultimately it means very little to the majority of people who search the web and make phone calls. A majority of people use the devices on Wi-Fi so ultimately the pages would load slightly faster. They intentionally block developers from supporting older devices in some cases, not even two years old, to force people to buy new devices by blocking apps from working. Many of these games and apps would work perfectly fine on older iOS versions, but your software must block older versions and devices or it will not be allowed in the store according to many articles.
