T-Mobile Announces Plan to Launch 'Disruptive' TV Service in 2018

T-Mobile today announced that it plans to launch a 'disruptive' new TV service in 2018 and will acquire Layer3 TV to help make it happen.

“People love their TV, but they hate their TV providers. And worse, they have no real choice but to simply take it – the crappy customer service, clunky technology and outrageous bills loaded with fees! That’s where we come in. We’re gonna fix the pain points and bring real choice to consumers across the country,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “It only makes sense for the Un-carrier to do to TV what we’re doing to wireless: change it for good! Personally, I can’t wait to start fighting for consumers here!”

Currently, Layer3 TV delivers a product that integrates television, streaming online video content, and social media in five cities across the US. T-Mobile plans to use Layer3's technology and team to build its new service taking advantage of the carrier's nationwide retail presence and customer care organization.

“No market needs Un-carrier-ing more than pay TV, so we’re completely stoked to join T-Mobile in disrupting the status quo!” said Jeff Binder, CEO of Layer3 TV, Inc. “Together with T-Mobile, we’re going to ditch everything you hate about cable and make everything you love about TV better.”

If it’s $40 like YouTube tv then it’s more of the same. In order for this to be disruptive they should give us all that for around $20. Otherwise, it would be more of the same, regardless of the great service they might or might not provide. I’m thinking channels like Sling tv, awesome quality like YouTube tv plus NETFLIX and easy integration like the iOS tv app for no more than around $20. That would really be disruptive. Any more than $25 would be more of the same.

And like someone else said, no commercials. We are already paying for it so why should we be hit with commercials when it isn’t live tv? Live I get it but otherwise no. And yes I’m happy with T-Mobile for my carrier. Works great for me. Doesn’t for everyone. Tv is another thing though. Hopefully not more of the same “distributive” stuff. I get all my tv viewing from apps now. I even got cbs app paid for just so I can watch Star Trek.

I’m totally in agreement with your projected service model and pricing. Everything you said sounds awesome, and at that $20-25 who wouldn’t jump on that plan? I’ve been being siphoned and taking it from Comcast Xfinity for far too long. It’s time to officially cut the cord with T-Mobile. I’ve never had any other wireless carrier in my lifetime. Let’s hope this is enough incentive to stick with the uncarrier through the thick of it. Many people have tried, few have done it right. Has anyone noticed the drop in advertising for YouTube TV? Why is that exactly? It was all the rage during the World Series, then it just sort of fizzled out. I wanted to give the trial a quick go around, but it was one of those give us your credit card ordeals and then we’ll let you try our product.

I’m the same, I have an Apple TV and use the TV app to integrate all of my services and media platforms together. I watch Star Trek TOS on Prime Video! It’s gorgeous, the remastered the visuals and graphics of the planets and ships! Absolutely stunning! Give it a go sometime, now they should do something like that for Next Generation. Make it look even more realistic!

Bravo Tmobile. I have been with them for several years and their couldn't be a better time to be alive, but by the time this rolls out, all of my devices are officially magentified. I've been a cord cutter since 2013, but once I try this out, all I can hope is to bypass commercials, after all were talking abut watching what we want, where we want, and when we want!
