Apple approved production of the long awaited AirPower wireless charging mat earlier this year, reports the WSJ.

The company earlier this year approved production of a wireless-charging pad called AirPower, according to people familiar with the matter. It had announced the product in late 2017. AirPower, which would allow users to charge the new AirPods and an iPhone simultaneously, has been delayed by product-development challenges, the people said.

This morning Apple announced its second generation AirPods which feature an optional wireless charging case. We were hoping to see AirPower announced alongside the new earbuds; however, the charger may still be on the way as numerous reports have now confirmed they're in production.

Hang on, earlier this year? I recall reading many articles and listening to many podcasts reporting that AirPower was having issues earlier this year too. So which is correct? You can’t have issues AND approval of it going to production at the same time!
